Accounting for the Benefits of Social Security and the Role of Business: Four Ideal Types and Their Different Heuristics.Rüdiger W. Waldkirch, Matthias Meyer & Karl Homann - 2009 - Journal of Business Ethics 89 (S3):247 - 267.
Germany is considered to be a pioneer of social security systems; nonetheless, globalization and demographic changes have put enormous pressure on them. A solution is not yet in sight as the debate on the future of the German social security systems still lacks consensus. We argue that ideas matter and that the debate can benefit from a deeper reflection on the concept of social security. This objective is pursued along two lines. First, we take a historical perspective and reconstruct the (...)

Shaped by Stories: The Ethical Power of Narratives.Marshall W. Gregory - 2009 - University of Notre Dame Press.
In his latest book, Marshall Gregory begins with the premise that our lives are saturated with stories, ranging from magazines, books, films, television, and blogs to the words spoken by politicians, pastors, and teachers. He then explores the ethical implication of this nearly universal human obsession with narratives. Through careful readings of Katherine Anne Porter's "The Grave," Thurber's "The Catbird Seat," as well as _David Copperfield_ and _Wuthering Heights_, Gregory asks the question: How do the stories we absorb in (...)

When Does Ethical Leadership Affect Workplace Incivility? The Moderating Role of Follower Personality.Shannon G. Taylor & Marshall W. Pattie - 2014 - Business Ethics Quarterly 24 (4):595-616.
ABSTRACT:Although prior work has shown that employees with ethical leaders are less likely to engage in deviant or unethical behaviors, it is unknown whetherallemployees respond this way or to the same extent. Drawing on social learning theory as a conceptual framework, this study develops and tests hypotheses suggesting that two follower characteristics—conscientiousness and core self-evaluation—moderate the negative relationship between ethical leadership and workplace incivility. Data from employees of a U.S. public school district supported our predictions. Implications and future research directions (...)

Seeing is believing.B. van Linder, W. van der Hoek & J.-J. Ch Meyer - 1997 - Journal of Logic, Language and Information 6 (1):33-61.
In this paper a formal framework is proposed in which variousinformative actions are combined, corresponding to the different ways in whichrational agents can acquire information. In order to solve the variousconflicts that could possibly occur when acquiring information fromdifferent sources, we propose a classification of the informationthat an agent possesses according to credibility. Based on this classification, we formalize what itmeans for agents to have seen or heard something, or to believesomething by default. We present a formalization of observations, communication actions, (...)

The volume brings together a collection of original papers on some of the main tenets of Joseph Raz's legal and political philosophy: Legal positivism and the nature of law, practical reason, authority, the value of equality, incommensurability, harm, group rights, and multiculturalism. James Griffin and Yael Tamir raise questions concerning Raz's notion of group rights and its application to claims of cultural and political autonomy, while Will Kymlicka and Bernhard Peters examine Raz's theory of multicultural society. Lukas Meyer investigates (...)

Physicians generally recommend that patients resuscitated with naloxone after opioid overdose stay in the emergency department for a period of observation in order to prevent harm from delayed sequelae of opioid toxicity. Patients frequently refuse this period of observation despiteenefit to risk. Healthcare providers are thus confronted with the challenge of how best to protect the patient’s interests while also respecting autonomy, including assessing whether the patient is making an autonomous choice to refuse care. Previous studies have shown that physicians (...)

  39. The "actors" of modern society: The cultural construction of social agency.John W. Meyer & Ronald L. Jepperson - 2000 - Sociological Theory 18 (1):100-120.
Much social theory takes for granted the core conceit of modern culture, that modern actors-individuals, organizations, nation states-are autochthonous and natural entities, no longer really embedded in culture. Accordingly, while there is much abstract metatheory about "actors" and their "agency," there is arguably little theory about the topic. This article offers direct arguments about how the modern (European, now global) cultural system constructs the modern actor as an authorized agent for various interests via an ongoing relocation into society of agency (...)

Human tecodic allaxis: An essay in terminology.W. Marshall Monford - 1991 - Journal of Medicine and Philosophy 16 (6):685-694.
What kinds of new terminology might be useful in discussions of human germline engineering and the bioethics thereof? There are two different schools of thought about how best to devise new terminology for molecular biology: the ‘common-usage school’, and the ‘classicist school’. The relative advantages and disadvantages of each are examined. Finally, several new terms are proposed and discussed. Keywords: allaxis, genetic engineering, germline, menedyne, moridic, palindyne, pre-embryonic, tecodic, totipotent, xynallaxis CiteULike Connotea Del.icio.us What's this?
